Frequently Asked Question about the garden?

The Frequently asked Question about the garden  are questions that have come up over the years from community members and gardeners. Some of these FAQ are part of the overview/guidelines/rules for the garden too.

What does my plot fee go to?

Plot fees go to the hydrant fee only and any left over money is held for replacing the hoses and/or sprinkler systems and/or water cans/tools etc.

Are dogs allowed in the garden?

Dogs are allowed in the garden but must be kept on leash while in the garde and kept out of other garden beds.

Please note it is a city ordinance that all dogs be on leash in the city of Cleveland and will be enforced.

Additionally we ask that everyone pick up their dog poop if the accident happens in the garden. No one likes to step in dog poop!! Plus its just gross not to!

Do I need to attend garden clean up?

Yes, The garden is a community area and should be taken care of by everyone and not just one individual or person. Everyone is responsible for maintaining the areas behind their plot along the fence lines however everyone is responsible for keeping the patio, paths and front garden bed looking nice. If you cannot make a garden clean up or they do not work for you schedule please feel free to reach out to Garden Lead.

How do I water my plants?

We water the garden in two forms: Community watering and solo watering (see definition below).

The garden leads try to get up early and water the garden throughout the summer and keep the water barrels full.

Solo watering: The water barrels have a small faucet and black hose attached to the water barrels you can fill the water cans with. We ask when you're done with the water please place them back in the front by the water barrels on the hooks.

** We ask community member not to play with these water barrel as they help our gardeners get water to their plants.

Where do I put my weeds from cleaning up my plot or the garden?

To cut down on pest and disease control we ask everyone to pack their weed and carry them to their curb in front of 1820 W.47th (north side of the garden) or take them home with them. The garden does not have funds to provide these but donations of the black contractor bags are always welcomed!

Am I allowed to leave my weed bags hanging out in the garden between sessions?

we strongly prefer that you carry your weeds out every time between cleaning up your bed or any space in the garden. If you can’t get them home because say you bike or walked

  1. Message to the garden lead directly via email or text

  2. And carry the bags to the curb in front of 1820 W.47th street

Does the garden compost?

Sadly at this time we do not compost due to our lot size being small and close to neighbors.   If we have enough gardeners and community members interested to pay for a rust belt rider we are happy to entertain that. Ashley and Eric currently have a person can they take to rust belt riders bins at Phoenix coffee on bridge if you are interested in chipping in to drop compost off there let us know.

Am I able to extend my growing season?

The garden lead understand winter are getting shorter and warmer so if you are interested in extending your growing season we ask you give the garden lead

  1. Heads up you will be continuing to garden past clean up gardening deadline

  2. Responsible for watering your own plot with your own water as October 31st we empty the rain barrel to prevent cracking of the plastic and the sprinkler head a disabled.

  3. Give a projected clean up date. Note we do ask most plots be cleaned up by November 30t since the block club uses the garden for the miracle on west 47th street during the first weekend in December.

When does the garden open and close for gardening?

Opening: April 1st  is when we are 100% open though we do not use the sprinkler until late May beginning of June however the water barrels will be filled after no signs of snow or frost.

Closing: We ask all gardeners to close their plot down by October 31st. This includes making sure your plot is clear of all vegetables and or weeds, doing a black blanket/cover crop/ garlic crop.

Does the garden have tools?

Yes, we have some tools that were donated and we ask you to keep them in the garden. If you need the tools for personal use please message the garden email

Are the raspberries, blueberries and black berries on the south side of the garden free game?

Yes, These were donated by neighbors and summer sprouts. If your interested in taking care of them please email the garden email

What if I notice a bug is eating my plants or my plant looks sick?

Plant pets that are common in the garden are aphids, vine and tomato caterpillars have been known to be garden pests too. Swallow caterpillars will destroy a good amount too!! We recommend checking and treating the plants how you prefer and happy to give tips if need be

*** We will keep everyone updated on the spotted lantern bugs as they have become very invasive in Ohio and PA.

What if I accidently broke a tool?

We also understand the tools in the garden get hit with a lot of elements so if for some reason you accidentally break a tool please let the garden lead know so we can make sure it gets replace

What if I notice there is a pest eating my plants?

Sadly this is part of the garden as a garden lead I have little control over. We do have skunks, rabbits and groundhogs in the area.

With all of this being said we do recommend fencing in your plot and or treating pests as soon as seen so they do not spread to other plots. Please also message the garden lead as well.

** 2023 we had to put up fencing due to deer population being pushed into the neighbor and mother deer and her baby eating some plant at the very beginning of the planting season**

Are there any plants I shouldn’t plant?

Yes we ask that you DO NOT plant any mint family plants!  Where the fire pit is now was a plot that was taken over by spearmint. To this day you’ll find spearmint throughout the garden area. We currently have a spearmint take over in the front north garden bed you are always welcome to take some for tea or mixed drinks

I’ve got vines taking over my garden. What can I do?

Morning glories or sweet autumn Clematis are very common in the garden as they are perennial for our growing zoning. Best way to eliminate them is to weed them out, smother them with a few layers of cardboard or thick weed barrier and mulch.

Additionally not allowing them to go to seed in August or September will help eliminate the seeds from ending up in your plot!

Are kids under 18 allowed in the garden?

Yes, but we prefer they have adult supervision. If the parent and the child have requested unsupervised access to the garden it may be granted however the access can be void if any gardener or community member feels they are causing issues to the garden or community space. Setting unsupervised access is decide by the garden lead and child must write up why they should have access to the garden as well as how they will be a good community steward to the garden.

Over the years we have had multiple young adults provide this to the garden lead and access has been granted.
